Dragons blow out Blue Jays in first KCI matchup

The Mid-Buchanan football team (3-0) showed why it’s the only undefeated team left in the KCI Conference when the West Platte football team (1-2) struggled en route to losing 42-0 on September 9.

West Platte moved the ball well in its first couple of drives but was unable to find a way onto the scoreboard and Mid-Buchanan didn’t hold back. After Dragon quarterback Xavier Arambula ran in for a 3-yard score to push the lead to 14-0 in the final two minutes of the first quarter, he throttled the Blue Jay defense on the ground with 244 rushing yards and four touchdowns by himself.

The West Platte running game, which has been solid in the opening two games of the fall, wasn’t clicking on the night. Dalton Woodward had 19 rushes for 51 yards but the Blue Jays only finished with 58 total rushing yards.

Mid-Buchanan built a 28-0 lead at the break and added to the score in the third period with the Dragons scoring exactly 14 points in each of the opening three quarters. West Platte junior quarterback Kane Cogan just missed out on surpassing triple digit passing yards, completing six of his 12 pass attempts for 99 yards and an interception.

The Dragons doubled the yardage that the Blue Jays’ offense had as Mid-Buchanan outgained West Platte 374 to 157. The Blue Jays had two fumbles, while also going three of 11 of third down conversions and zero for four on fourth down conversions.

After the win, the Dragons have now won seven consecutive games against the Blue Jays, with a 2015 postseason win by West Platte being the last time Mid-Buchanan lost in the series. It’s officially homecoming week for West Platte who will look to win its first home game of the fall when the Blue Jays host Plattsburg (0-3) on September 16.
