A Kansas City, Kan. man is charged with resisting a lawful stop after fleeing from police and leading them on a high-speed chase through southern Platte County in March.
William Vanbebber, 43, remains in custody on $10,000 bond at the Platte County Detention Center as of press time, charged with resisting arrest. A court appearance is scheduled this week, with the suspect asking for a bond reduction to $5,000
According to a report by the Missouri Highway Patrol, near midnight on Monday, March 16 Vanbebber was stopped on Interstate 635 at mile marker 12 for no registration light, excessive window tinting and reckless driving. When the officer asked Vanbebber to exit the vehicle, he instead fled northward on I-635 in his small Chevrolet pickup. The Highway Patrolman pursued Vanbebber onto Interstate 29, reaching speeds of 75 miles per hour. Vanbebber exited onto Highway 169, then exited again onto Briarcliff Parkway.
Once on Briarcliff, court documents state Vanbebber recklessly turned around and got back onto Hwy. 169, then abruptly exited onto Highway 9. He swerved to avoid stop strips set up by the Riverside Police Department and lost control of his S-10 pickup. The truck left the roadway, overcorrected, swerved to the other side of the highway, through a ditch and struck a rock embankment where it overturned.
Vanbebber was located laying in the ditch, injured, and a female passenger found in the truck was also injured, suffering severe head injuries.
Vanbebber had a suspended Kansas driver’s license, a Kansas felony warrant and two misdemeanor warrants on the Missouri side.
