Lady Pirates fall to Bulldogs in tight contest

The Pirates were on the verge of their second win of the season but were unable to pull out the victory when the Platte County girls’ basketball team (1-6) came up short against Kearney (1-6) 37-33 on Dec. 16.

In Platte County’s first conference matchup of 2021, a sluggish second quarter put Kearney in the driver’s seat. After being tied 9-9 after the opening frame, the Bulldogs outscored the Pirates 8-2 to take a 17-11 lead at the break.

Both teams scored 10 points in the third quarter and Platte County had a late surge to get back in the ball game. Reese Pickett knocked down a trey late in regulation to tie the contest at 33, but the Pirates were unable to make more shots down the stretch and lost by four points.

Platte County junior Joslyn Hupp made all six of her field goal attempts to end with 12 points, while Pickett ended with seven points, four assists and one steal. Cameron (6-2) is the Pirates’ next opponent when Platte County heads to Hy-Vee Arena on Dec. 22.
