After the Pirates were eliminated from postseason contention last season by the Bulldogs in the Class 5 District 16 Championship Game, the Platte County boys’ basketball team (7-0) got revenge by defeating Kearney (2-5) 66-39 on Dec. 17.
The rivalry between the Pirates and Bulldogs goes beyond the postseason basketball contest last year as the Kansas City Suburban Blue Division foes have had countless battles in various sports. Platte County was prepared for its first conference opponent of the season, only allowing three Kearney points in the opening frame and then poured out 27 second quarter points to take a comfortable 37-16 lead at the break.
Kearney made a small comeback attempt in the third period, yet still trailed by 17 entering the final eight minutes, and Platte County closed the game out to secure a 27-point victory. Jace Trimble stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, five assists and seven steals.
Brody Fulk ended with 16 points, Chandavian Bradley finished with 11 points and Eli Nelson knocked down a pair of 3-points to give him seven points, along with four assists. The Pirates will have some time off until their next game on Jan. 4 when they will be hitting the road to take on Ruskin (2-5).
