Lady Pirates home opener slips away late

A last inning run by Blue Springs (2-0) haunted the Platte County softball team (3-4) in its home opener as the Lady Pirates fell 5-4 on September 1.

Following two scoreless innings, the Lady Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Morgan Shields reached first base on an error and eventually found her way to third base when the ensuing batter, Abby Reynolds, had a sacrifice bunt. Avery Webster singled on a ground ball to right field to ignite a 4-run inning, sending Shields across home plate.

Platte County’s Danica Salisbury had one strikeout in three innings in the Lady Pirates 5-4 home opening loss to Blue Springs on Sept. 1.

With two outs on the board, the Lady Pirates took advantage of another error when Emma Reed reached first base and scored when Mackenzie Shields had an RBI double. Takayla Lawson singled on a line drive to center field and Platte County took a 4-2 advantage.

The Lady Pirates’ lead was chipped in the ensuing inning, with the Lady Wildcats scoring one run. Blue Springs had two hits in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at four. With one out in the top of the seventh inning, Blue Springs had a ground ball hit to short stop Demi Riechers who threw out the batter and a Lady Wildcat runner scored to put Platte County behind, 5-4.

The Lady Pirates closed out the inning, but their offense was unable to capitalize with all three batters failing to reach first base and Platte County lost the game. The Lady Pirates had five hits and were led offensively by Makenzie Shields with one hit and two RBIs.

Platte County is off to its slowest start since the 2015 season but has lost to teams with a combined 14-2 record. The Lady Pirates will play at Smithville (3-0) on September 6.
