Platte County takes down St. Joseph’s Central, falls to Staley

Platte County senior Ellie Fish helped lead the Lady Pirates to a 5-4 victory over St. Joseph’s Central when she and Olivia Holbrook won their doubles match 8-4 on Aug. 31.

The Platte County girls’ tennis team (1-1) split a pair of matches to start off the fall.

The Lady Pirates kicked off the season with a tight 5-4 win over St. Joseph’s Central at Noyes Tennis Complex. The match started on Monday, August 29, but was postponed due to rain and then finished on Wednesday, August 31.

The match marked the first time in program history that a match was postponed and finished on a different date. The match was played in an unusual format, with singles being played before doubles, since there was a scheduling conflict with the Indians having senior pictures.

Platte County struck first when sophomore Maggie McBratney earned an 8-5 win over Alisha Gupta and junior Addy Mayne won 8-2 over Emilia Rodriguez-Savage to put the Lady Pirates up 2-0. Central won the next two matches – with Olivia Holbrook and Madelyn McFall both losing their singles matches – then senior Cosette Stephenson won a tight 9-8 (7-5) right before the storm came in.

Platte County was leading 3-2 when the rain forced the match to be postponed and Elli Fish was the only Lady Pirate who was unable to finish her match on the opening day. The senior had a 5-3 lead when the match was delayed, but she ended up falling 8-6 to Mary Kissock.

The Lady Indians took a 4-3 lead by winning the first doubles match then the Lady Pirates tied the match back up when McFall and Burnett won their doubles match, 8-3. With the match coming down to the final doubles team, Holbrook and Fish trailed 4-3 before scoring every point for the rest of the way to win the game 8-4 and Platte County won the match 5-4.

Platte County had a tough match in its home opener when the Pirates lost 8-1 to Staley on September 1. McFall and Stephenson won their doubles match 8-6 for Platte County’s only point of the day.
