Man charged with assaulting K9 officer

A Liberty man is facing charges — including assaulting a canine officer — after he led police on a high-speed chase across Platte County last month.

Ryan Baker, 26, remains in custody in Platte City on a $15,000 cash-only bond, charged with resisting a lawful stop, assaulting a canine officer and other minor charges. A request for bond modification was denied and Baker is scheduled to appear before Judge Anne Hansbrough on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

According to court documents, officers attempted a traffic stop on Baker in the early morning hours of Sunday, Aug. 11 at Congress Avenue and Tiffany Springs Parkway because his motorcycle had no tail lights or license plate. The motorcycle also matched descriptions of a reckless driver reported earlier in the night.

When officers tried to stop the motorcycle, a passenger jumped off and fled on foot and the driver sped off. While the female passenger was quickly detained, Baker led police on a 15-minute chase that covered 20 miles and reached speeds of 130 miles per hour. Baker weaved in and out of traffic and drove in oncoming lanes, leading police to a gas station off Highway 92 near Beverly, where he ditched the bike and attempted to hide in the store.

Platte County Sheriff’s Office canine officer Aries pursued Baker into the store, where Baker started to hit the dog with his motorcycle helmet. Aries bit the suspect and was able to bring him under control when deputies reached him.

The dog is OK, according to officials at the sheriff’s office.

Baker told police he didn’t have a motorcycle license and fled because he didn’t want to go back to prison. Police were able to confirm Baker was on parole for possession of a controlled substance and burglary. Online court records show Baker had a previous conviction in Clay County in 2017.

The female passenger, Brianna Noah, was found to be in possession of methamphetamine and was on probation from another conviction.
