A burglary and the theft of a dog has landed a Kansas City man in jail in Platte County.
Charles Chevalier, 40, has been charged with felony burglary and stealing a dog. Chevalier was charged in January and held on $10,000 cash-only bond. That bond was reduced to $5,000 cash or surety this week, but as of press time Chevalier remained in custody at the Platte County Detention Center.
According to court documents, a Platte County deputy responded to a call on Northwest 70th Street about a suspicious man leaving a home with a brown and white dog on Thursday, Jan. 2. A witness told the deputy they had seen Chevalier break a panel out of the front door of a home, reach inside the door, open it and walk inside the residence. He was seen walking out with items in his hands along with the dog.
The homeowner said Chevalier was not allowed at the residence and had broken in.
Chevalier was located walking down a nearby road with the dog and stolen items. A wheel barrel, a book and a pair of black gloves belonging to the victim were found with Chevalier. During a search police found a glass pipe with black residue in Chevalier’s pocket. The residue tested positive for methamphetamine.
Police say Chevalier has multiple active warrants through both Kansas City, Kan. and Kansas City police departments.
