A Kansas City, Kan., man avoided jail time for his role in a pursuit from the Platte County Sheriff’s Department that reached 100 miles per hour with a child in the backseat last summer.
LaRon L. Matthews, 36, agreed to a plea bargain on Thursday, Jan. 31. Matthews pleaded guilty to resisting arrest and was given a four-year prison sentence that was suspended, but was ordered to serve 28 days shock time and was given credit for time served.
He was placed on five years of supervised probation, ordered to complete 100 hours of community service, attend drug and alcohol counseling and is not allowed to drive unless properly licensed and insured.
A Platte County Sheriff’s deputy made a traffic stop at 8:25 p.m. on June 12 at NW 56th Street and Meadowvale on a black Nissan Altima with Kansas tags.
The driver told the deputy he was Darius W. Green and provided a social security number verbally.
As the officer walked back to his patrol car, ‘Green’ drove off going on Southbound Interstate 29 from 56th Street.
A pursuit continued southbound on Interstate 635 with speeds reaching 100 miles per hour in the 55 mph zone. The driver, who had a child in the backseat, exited at Parallel Parkway and the pursuit ended due to the risk of the child, estimated to be six to eight years old, according to court documents.
Dispatch advised the deputy there was no Darius Green on file, but the social security number came back to Matthews. The Kansas City (Kan.) Police Department took Matthews in custody at 3310 N. 84th Place and the PCSO deputy responded and positively identified Matthews as the driver who said he was Darius Green.
