North Platte shuts out East Buchanan to close out opening tournament

The Lady Panthers’ softball team (3-0) came out of the gate fast to set the tone for the season by comfortably winning the North Platte Round Robin Tournament for the second consecutive season on August 27.

North Platte’s Camryn Kersten tags a St. Michael runner in the Lady Panthers 15-0 win in the second game on August 27.

North Platte started the fall off with a dominant 18-2 victory over Lexington before back-to-back 15-0 shutout wins against St. Michael and East Buchanan, all of which lasted only three innings. North Platte didn’t allow a single hit in the second and third games and in the opening contest, the Lady Panthers erupted for 15 hits and had no errors.

With a 1-0 lead heading into the second inning, Scarlett Slugantz started the inning off with a double, igniting a strong inning where North Platte had ten hits and 12 runs. Kenedie Summers had a home run in the inning before the Lady Panthers added five more runs in the ensuing inning to take an 18-0 margin until Lexington scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning.

On game two of the day, North Platte took on St. Michael and a first inning two-run home run by Jaylin Burgess turned into a five-run inning. Camryn Kersten hit a homer over centerfield in the second inning, Lindsay Ramsey had an RBI triple in the third inning and Kate Wolf threw a no-hitter with five strikeouts to help lead North Platte to a 15-0 win.

North Platte’s final game of the Round Robin Tournament was against the only other KCI Conference school there, East Buchanan. Slugantz was on the mound for the Lady Panthers and didn’t allow a single hit.

North Platte only batted in two innings due to a mercy rule with a 15-run margin and being the home team. The Lady Panthers rattled off seven runs in the first inning and eight runs in the second inning.

Olivia Rogers had three of the team’s 16 hits, along with two RBIs, while Kersten added two hits and four RBIs. Courtney Dehn, Burgess, Ramsey and Summers all had two hits apiece against the Bulldogs.
