Ahead of the matchup between the Platte County and Park Hill South tennis teams, the Pirates had won eight consecutive matches but that didn’t stop the Panthers from coming out with a 6-3 win on April 18.
Park Hill South set the tone for the match by winning two of the three doubles matches. Noah Patel and Timmy Tasler took down Jack Forrest and Nathan Vanek 8-5, while Ryan Kempton and Ryan Murray beat Jack Bralley and Jaron Cook 8-3.
Platte County’s number two doubles team – Gavin Nichols and Mason McBratney – came away with an 8-5 win over Jack Arnold and Miles Bingham. In the singles, Nichols and McBratney were the only Pirates to come out with victories, doing so with scores of 8-4 and 8-6, respectively.
In singles, Patel and Henry Jacobs defeated Forrest and Vanek 8-3 and Tasler beat Bralley 8-4, respectively. Bingham and Cook’s match went down to the wire with the Panther pulling out a 9-8 (7-5) triumph.
This was the fifth straight win for Park Hill South, which went on to defeat Staley on April 20. The Panthers came out with a one-sided 8-1 victory over the Falcons on the day.
For the Pirates, this was the first of two straight losses as they went on to lose 6-3 to St. Joseph’s Central on April 20. Bralley and Cook were the sole Pirate doubles victory, doing so by a score of 8-5.
McBratney took down Michael Tang 8-6 and Cook defeated Andy Goddard 8-4. Nichols was beaten 2-8 and Bralley lost 5-8, while Forrest and Vanek were defeated 3-8.
The regular season is winding down with few matches remaining ahead of the postseason. Platte County is looking to lock up a top-2 seed in the Class 2 District 8 Tournament with four more regular season matches and a tournament.
Park Hill South is looking to make a push with the strong play as of late with the third-most wins among teams who will be in the Class 3 District 8 Tournament. The Panthers will have a big match next when they host Liberty – who has a 15-3 record and has won nine straight against Park Hill South dating back to 2014 – on April 26.
