Park Hill South sends seven events past sectionals

Park Hill South’s Judy Eflul, above, was the Class 5 Sectional 4 Champion in the 100-meter hurdles and finished in fourth place in the 300-meter hurdles at Lee’s Summit North High School.

The Park Hill South track and field team entered the Class 5 Sectional 4 Meet on May 21 at Lee’s Summit North High School with 11 events and had seven of those events earn a spot at state.

Four of the five Lady Panthers’ events survived the day with the 4x800-meter relay team just missing the cut with a fifth-place finish, as only the top-4 in each event advance. Judy Elful stole the show for the Park Hill South girls, qualifying in two events.

Elful was the sectional champion in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing the race in 15.03 seconds, and finished in fourth place in the 300-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 46.11 seconds. Ella Conklin is the other Lady Panther who still has one track meet left this spring as she ended in fourth place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:24.66.

The Park Hill South boys had three relay teams compete and delivered with a top-3 finish in all three. The Panthers took third place in the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays and were the sectional champions in the 4x200-meter relay, with a time of 1:28.38.

Jack Franklin sped past all but one runner in the 400-meter dash, to claim second place overall and an opportunity at state, with a time of 50.42 seconds. Terrius Walker is the only other Panther individual who punched a ticket to state as a 43-01-foot leap was good enough for fourth place in the triple jump.

Darrien Jones fell 4-10.75-feet short in the discus when his 142-08.25-foot heave claimed sixth place and Tyler Clippard ran the mile in 5:01.71 to take seventh place. Park Hill South will travel to Jefferson City for the Class 5 State Meet on May 27 and 28.
