A strong performance in the second quarter was a key difference in the Platte County boys’ basketball team’s fifth straight victory to start the season.
In the Pirates’ second home game of the season, Grain Valley (1-2) came to town and put up a fight on Dec. 10. The Eagles matched the home team with 17 points in the first quarter, but Platte County began to pull away in the second frame by scoring 21 points.
The Pirates held a 38-29 lead at the break and they were able to hold off a late surge by Grain Valley as Platte County won 63-30. Jarett Mueller and Jace Trimble combined for 34 points and six treys on the night.
Mueller scored a team-high 18 points along with three steals when he shot four of eight from downtown. Trimble added 16 points with a pair of 3-pointers, seven assists and three steals.
Brody Fulk finished with 11 points and six rebounds, while Isaac Havemeier scored six points and grabbed six rebounds. The Pirates will host Kearney (2-2) - the team that eliminated Platte County in the Class 5 District 16 Championship Game last year - on Dec. 17 at 7 p.m.
