Platte City woman dies in wreck

An 80-year-old Platte City woman died in a two-vehicle crash last week in rural Platte County.

The Platte County Sheriff’s Office responded to a crash at Highway 45 Spur and Stillings Road at around 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24.

According to a release from the Sheriff’s Office, an 80-year-old woman from Platte City was driving a 2017 Mitsubishi SUV with one passenger, a two month old baby, northbound in the intersection of Highway 45 Spur and Stillings Road when their vehicle was struck by a 2002 Ram 2500 traveling west on 45 Spur. The truck was driven by a 65-year-old man from Mclouth, Kan.

The elderly woman — whose name had not yet been released at press time — died at the hospital at about 8:30 p.m. that night. The baby — who has also not yet been identified — was transported to Children’s Mercy Hospital for treatment.

Police determined the infant was properly secured in a car seat and the woman was wearing a seat belt.

The accident investigation is still ongoing and is being conducted by the sheriff’s crash team.
