Platte County blanks Indians, tops Bulldogs in OT

Platte County picked up a second straight win and fifth overall with a 2-0 shutout against Fort Osage on Monday, Sept. 10 in Independence, Mo.

The Pirates got on the board early against the Indians when Carter Hays scored in the 8th minute. He headed the ball in off a pass from Ethan Dolan.

The score remained that until Blake Cochran added an insurance goal for Platte County in the 48th minute. The goal was set up by Grant Allen’s free kick.

About a minute after that marker, Ian Lang came up with a big save to keep the Indians off the scoreboard. In the process, the combo of Jackson Hughley and Lang pitched a second shutout of the season.

Thyssen scored on a pass from Grant Allen in the 79th minute of regulation, which forged a 1-1 tie with the Bulldogs.

“We haven’t had one like that,” Platte County coach Ashlyn Brantley said of the late rally. “It is good to see the guys work through and keep the pressure on.”

Scoreless after 40 minutes, Tom Earl got a header past Platte County goalkeeper Ian Lang in the 51st minute.

Lang made a diving save in the 70th minute to preserve the 1-0 deficit and the offense kept attacking. In the 74th minute, Kearney’s Parker Snider punched a shot out of bounds. Two minutes later, the Pirates had another shot on goal that Snider turned away.

In overtime, a throw in eventually led to the goal that Bunge score, sneaking a shot into the left post and past Snider.

“I saw Hans and I knew he had the ball on the wing and I knew he would look for me at the top of the box,” Bunge said. “I made a run in and no one was there and I took the shot.”

The victory gave Platte County its eighth straight win against Kearney dating back to 2015.
