The Platte County girls’ soccer team (7-7) has climbed out of the hole of early season struggles and has officially reached a .500 record en route to being the runner-up in the North Kansas City Tournament.
The North Kansas City Tournament lasted three days and each game was an opponent that the Lady Pirates had played already this spring. Platte County had won the tournament the last three seasons and has played in the championship every year since 2018, including this year.
The Lady Pirates were temporarily above .500 ahead of the championship game, which was a 2-0 loss to Smithville (9-3) – who scored a goal late in both halves – on April 22. This was the second matchup of the season between the Lady Pirates and Lady Warriors with Platte County also losing 2-1 in regular season play on March 30.
Ahead of the championship, Platte County took down Kearney – for the second time in three tries this season – to move to 7-6 on the year on April 21. Lauren Stone had the sole goal on the night when the Lady Pirates won 1-0.
Platte County opened up the tournament with a 2-0 victory over William Chrisman (4-8) on April 20. The Lady Pirates’ defense was impressive on the night, only allowing three shots with Finley Kaser having two saves.
After a scoreless first half, Rylee Burris took a pass from Sloan Kassen and scored, followed by a goal by Stone. Precisely 14 days before, the Lady Pirates beat the Lady Bears 4-0 at William Chrisman High School.
Platte County will have five games left ahead of the postseason, two on the road and three at home. Next up for the Lady Pirates is an away game against Raytown (2-8) on April 27.
