The Platte County boys’ swimming team came out on top over St. Joseph’s Central, Smithville and Savannah at a home meet on Oct. 18.
The Pirates were in a tight race with the Indians, who finished in second place with 535 points, with the winning squad finishing with 549 points. The Savages took third place with 267 points and the Warriors had 209 points to claim fourth place.
Platte County started the day off strong, winning the opening event: the 200-yard medley relay. Deacon Gutshall, Gage Jonkman, Collin Burton and Palmer Keith finished three seconds ahead of the next best team, taking first place in 1:47.64.
Platte County also impressed in the 200-yard freestyle relay, having a pair of teams claim second place and sixth place. The Pirates had three of the top-5, including the winning squad, in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
In the second event, the 200-yard freestyle, the Pirates had four consecutive finishers from second to fifth places starting with Jack Hokanson in 2:09.24. Cobie Parkin claimed third place, Brogan Miller collected fourth place and Landon Steffel came in fifth place.
Keith impressed in a pair of individual events, taking first place in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly in 23.46 seconds and 56.08 seconds, respectively. Burton wasn’t far behind in either race, taking seventh place in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.74 seconds and third place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.49.
In the 50-yard freestyle, Carson Howe and Weston Grimes finished in back-to-back spots in fifth and sixth places. Howe finished in 24.66 seconds and Grimes ended in 24.69 seconds.
Gutshall added 20 points to Platte County’s already high tally mark in the 100-yard freestyle as he was the first-place finisher in 51.65 seconds. In third place, Jonkman finished in 55.40 seconds as he was followed by teammates Grimes and Brayden Carter in the next two places.
The Pirates were in three of the top-6 places in the 500-yard freestyle, starting with Hokanson in a time of 5:54.23, which was a second-place time. Dylan Smith and Sonny Marquez took fifth and sixth places with times of 8:14.55 and 8:25.38, respectively.
Gutshall won the 100-yard backstroke in 57.59 seconds, followed by Brock Uthe in fourth place and Scott Desjardin in fifth place. In the last individual event of the day, Parkin claimed fourth place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:19.70, followed by Steffel in 11th place in 1:45.
