A domestic assault in Riverside last month led to a public altercation and firearms charges for a Riverside man.
Derrick Jones, 43, is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm as a convicted felon, domestic assault using a firearm and defacing a firearm. Jones remains in custody on $50,000 bond. A bond reduction request was denied by judge Ann Hansbrough last week and Jones is set to appear again on July 14.
According to court documents, Riverside police responded to a domestic assault call on May 11. Bystanders reported a male armed with a gun and upon arrival police found several residents in the apartment complex pointing out the suspect, who was yelling he was going to kill the victim. The victim was standing near the apartment door and police witnessed Jones grab her by the arm and pull her inside. Officers ordered Jones to open the door and heard the victim screaming inside. Officers forced the door open and Jones fled further into the apartment but then surrendered. A .38 special was located in his pants pocket.
The victim’s phone had been broken, her hair extensions pulled out and her knee abraded. She told police they had been romantically involved in the past, but were currently just roommates. She had fallen asleep while cooking a burrito and Jones came home to the burrito burning in the oven. Jones became enraged and choked her, dragging her around the apartment and getting his gun.
Two 911 calls were reported from the area, with the victim herself calling once and a witness calling later saying she was “tired of him beating the woman.”
Jones has an extensive criminal history in Arkansas and Missouri, including possession of a controlled substance, domestic battery, a firearms violation in federal court and a probation release violation.
