Girls wrestling roundup: Sampson takes 1st at Plattsburg

North Platte’s Haley Sampson won an individual title for Mid-Buchanan at the Sam Martin Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 18 in Plattsburg.

Sampson went a perfect 5-0 on the day and improved to 9-1 on the season.

The sophomore, who was a state qualifier last year for the North Platte/Mid-Buchanan co-op opened with two pins, beating Fort Osage’s Sadie Waller (115 pounds) and Lawson’s Amaya Kennedy. Sampson got an 8-6 victory in sudden death overtime against Kenya Maqueda of Marshall to wrap up pool play.

In the semifinals, she beat Jaclyn Riedinger of North Andrews by a pin in 4:48. In the finals, she beat Maqueda again, this time by a comfortable 13-4 margin.

Also placing for the Dragons with North Platte connections were Ariana Hartigan and Brooklyn Dunn.

Dunn (166) took fourth and Hartigan (110) was sixth.

Mid-Buchanan tied for sixth with Lathrop, while West Platte took 15th place in the 25-field team field.

West Platte had two wrestlers there and Selina Friedrid earned a medal.

She posted a 3-2 mark, getting wins over Hartigan (9-0), Paige Cobb of Truman (pin in 54 seconds) and against Grace Liles of Plattsburg (pin in 3:50).

GKC Suburban Conference Invitational 

Two wrestlers racked up 40 points and helped Park Hill South place third at the Greater Kansas City Suburban Conference Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 18 in Belton.

Maddie Kubicki ran her season record to 18-0 after getting three wins for the Panthers. She won the title after pinning Staley’s Madison Schmude (1:55), Blue Springs’ Rhian Kempf (1:32) and Belton’s Kathryn Eager (1:15).

Finley Bickford was a runner-up, after falling to Belton’s KeShana Jones by a pin in the second period. Bickford (142) got pins against Staley’s Kambrie Hedrick (55 seconds) and Ray-Pec’s Madie Young (37 seconds).

Winnetonka Tournament

All three wrestlers brought home first-place finishes for Park Hill during the Winnetonka Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 18. 

Eve Herlyn (125) got a pair of wins by falls, taking down Madison Leverknight of Winnetonka and then pinned Kenna Price of Staley. 

Taryn Johnson got three wins at the 130-pound class. She pinned Staley’s Gisele Knight and Kearney’s Ruby Freestone before ending with a 14-7 win against Breanna Eastham.

Cierra Miller (142) got three wins as well, pinning all three. She pinned Jocelyn Cunningham of Staley in 1:00, while pinning Leah Prohaska of Staley (1:21) and Meraid Jorgensen of William Chrisman (1:41) in the first period as well. 

Lady Bobcat Classic

Platte County had a trio of wrestlers place at the Basehor-Linwood Classic on Saturday, Jan. 18 in Basehor, Kan.

Serina Bertram took first place for the Pirates. Elizabeth Humburg was third and KayLyn Munn placed fourth.

Other matches

St. Joseph Benton 15, Mid-Buchanan 6

The Dragons lost a dual on Thursday, Jan. 16 in St. Joseph. Two of the four matches wrestled featured North Platte students — Brooklyn Dunn and Ariana Hartigan — but both lost. 

Park Hill South 12, Liberty North 6

In the only two matches contested, the Panthers won both in a dual on Tuesday, Jan. 14.

Maddie Kubicki (135) pinned Payton Matthews in 57 seconds to tie the match at 6-6 after a forfeit at 103.

Finley Bickford (142) followed with a pin in 43 seconds against Jane Grundy to secure the win for Park Hill South.

Lawson 30, West Platte 18

Lathrop 30, West Platte 12

The Bluejays got three wins in a row and took a lead against Lawson but lost four straight in a KCI Conference dual on Tuesday, Jan. 14 in Weston.

After giving up a forfeit at 110, Selina Friedrid (115) pinned Amaya Kennedy in 38 seconds for the first win for West Platte. Mikenna Peters (120) followed with a pin over Kennedy in 1:58. 

Cosette Clark (125) got a forfeit win for West Platte. Lawson got three of its final four wins by forfeits to take the showdown.

The only two wins against Lathrop were by forfeits, going to Clark and Friedid. Lathrop won two matches and got three wins by forfeits.
