KCI girls basketball roundup: Richmond rallies to defeat North Platte

Richmond rallied in the fourth quarter to beat North Platte, 50-47, in the fifth-place game of the Lawson Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 18.

The game was a back-and-forth contest that saw North Platte lead after the first and third quarters. The Panthers took a 40-37 lead into the final 8 minutes but scored seven points on two baskets and two free throws and saw the Spartans rally

Emmalee Kilpatrick scored five of her team-high 18 points for Richmond, while Ava Murphy had four of her 17 in the fourth. 

North Platte scored 20 points in the first quarter – six from McKenzie Brockhoff – but had 20 over the next two quarters combined. 

Three players scored in double figures for North Platte, led by 12 from Brockhoff and Ryann Smith, who hit four 3s. Josie Roach had 11.

North Platte 57, West Platte 30

In a preview of a rivalry game later this season, the Panthers won a showdown against the Bluejays in the consolation bracket of the Lawson Invitational on Wednesday, Jan. 15.

The Panthers held West Platte to seven or less points in three of the fourth quarters. North Platte (7-4) went up 19-7 after the opening quarter behind 11 points from Josie Roach.

By halftime, North Platte led 38-9 after ceding only one basket in the second quarter.

Roach had 22 points, only six after halftime, but McKenzie Brockhoff accounted for 11 of the team’s 19 points in the second half. The Peru State volleyball signee finished with 17 points. 

Katy Tharp finished with 12 for West Platte, seven of those coming in the second half.

Trenton girls 46, West Platte 32

The No. 2-seeded Bulldogs got 13 points from Maci Moore in the first quarter to spark a victory on Tuesday, Jan. 14 in an opening-round game of the Lawson Tournament.

Katy Tharp scored seven points in the first quarter for the Bluejays and finished with a team-high 11 points. West Platte trailed 19-12 after the first quarter but were limited to only eight points the next two quarters and were down by 20 going into the fourth.

Moore finished with a game-high 29 points for the Bulldogs. 

Carrollton girls 51, North Platte 41

The Panthers led at halftime but were held to only 17 points in the second half and dropped their opener in the Lawson Invitational on Tuesday, Jan. 14.

Carrollton (7-2) scored 17 points in the third quarter, getting 10 from Raegan Pierson, to take a 35-33 lead into the fourth quarter. North Platte (7-4) were held to only two field goals in the final 8 minutes. Carrollton hit 10 of 16 free throws in the fourth to ice the win.

Pierson finished with 12 points, but the leading scorer was MacKenzie Brown, who had 25 for the Spartans, getting eight in the fourth. 

McKenzie Brockhoff hit 9 of 11 free throws and tallied 19 points for North Platte. Josie Roach added 12 points as well, hitting a pair of 3s in the second quarter.

North Platte: The Panthers girls will play at Savannah on Wednesday, Jan. 22, then the boys and girls will play a doubleheader on Friday, Jan. 24 at home versus Lawson.
