The prolific careers of the eight seniors on the Park Hill South girls’ soccer team (14-7) came to an end in heartbreaking fashion on May 16.
In a highly competitive district, Park Hill South was the No. 3 seed and played No. 2 seed Liberty (12-10) in the semifinals at Liberty North High School. The Lady Blue Jays took down the Lady Panthers 2-1 in overtime in the regular season matchup on April 9 and won by the same score in regulation when the teams walked off the field in the postseason contest.
Olivia Clemons scored the opening goal of the day in the 34th minute off an assist from Keegan Good, but the Lady Panthers were unable to capitalize on another score the rest of the way despite having more shots and more time of possession than the Lady Blue Jays. Liberty knotted the game up right before the break when Jericho Frigon scored her first of two goals in the 39th minute.
Frigon converted on another goal at 53’ to put Liberty up 2-1 and Park Hill South failed to find the back of the net to tie and extend the game, getting eliminated from postseason play. The Lady Panthers senior class has helped lead them to a 43-18-1 record in the three years they played for Park Hill South – omitting the 2020 spring season that was cancelled due to Covid-19 – including a trip to the Class 4 State Quarterfinals last season.
In the opening round of the Class 4 District 8 Tournament, Park Hill South crushed St. Joseph’s Central (9-10) when Good had yet another hat-trick – her third in four games up to that point – in the 6-0 victory on May 14. Good scored or assisted each of the first three scores of the contest, starting with an assist to Clemons at 13’.
Good gave the Lady Panthers a 3-0 lead when she slipped a pair of shots into the back of the net in the 19th and 38th minutes, off assists from Lily Reuscher and Anna Bolger. Park Hill South continued to strong play in the second half, scoring a goal six minutes in when Lily DiBernardo found Clemons for her second score of the day. Bolger dished it to Good in the 56th minute to help the senior complete the hat-trick and score her final goal in a Park Hill South uniform.
At 61’, Isabelle Larson found the back of the net on a pass from Maddie Fosmoe to lift the Lady Panthers to a 6-0 victory. Park Hill South was hoping for a chance to play in another district title game but will have to wait another season for that chance.
