Platte County bounces back with mercy rule victory after Smithville ends eight-game winning streak

The Platte County girls’ soccer team (9-2) had a nearly perfect eight-game run – outscoring its opponents 47 to one during the stretch – until a 1-0 overtime loss to Smithville (10-1) ended the Lady Pirates’ winning streak on April 14.

Dating back to 2019, the last four matchups between Platte County and Smithville were decided by one goal, so it was inevitable that the latest conference clash came down to the wire as it concluded on a sudden death goal in overtime. After a slugfest in regulation, Smithville took over the advantage when play continued in extra minutes.

In the 83rd minute, Smithville’s Alayna Edwards knocked down a shot into the top left corner of the net. The Lady Warriors’ 1-0 win was the first Blue Division opponent to take down the Lady Pirates in nearly a year, with Smithville being the last team to do it – with the same score on April 29, 2021.

Riley Smith scored the Lady Pirates’ third first half goal in the 8-0 victory over Grandview on April 18.

The Smithville goal was the first score that freshman goalkeeper Finley Kaser has allowed since March 28 against St. Joseph’s Central (6-4). Platte County wasted no time to earn another victory following the heartbreaking defeat as it took down its next opponent, Grandview (6-5-1), with an 8-0 margin on April 18.

Hannah Stone set the tone for the contest when the senior scored the opening goal in the fifth minute off a pass from Lily Kytasaari. Less than 10 minutes later, Stone assisted on the Lady Pirates’ second goal – made by Riley Smith – and Avery Webster added two scores to close out the half.

Platte County took a 4-0 advantage at the break and Smith wasted no time in the second half to keep the Lady Pirates’ foot on the gas. The Platte County senior gave her team a five-goal lead in the fifth minute with her second score of the night.

Four minutes later, Paige Chase took a pass from Kytasaari and connected with the back of the net. Kassen Sloan ended the game with two goals in less than five minutes as her second goal automatically caused the contest to end with the eight-goal margin mercy rule.
