After a decade spent serving others through the American Red Cross, Rebecca Nafzinger is seeking another way to serve her community. Although she has never run for public office before, she has thrown her hat in the ring for the Nov. 8 election by running for Platte County Clerk.
“I am proud to have had the opportunity to be ‘on the ground’ for disaster relief including aiding the victims and families of the 9/11 attacks in N.Y,” Nafzinger said. “I was responsible for numerous volunteers through programs in which low-income people were provided free smoke alarms and disaster preparedness education.”
She has worked to support her community most of her career. For the last eight years she was a real estate agent. For Nafzinger, the opportunity to run for office sounded like a good fit for her to explore a new realm to continue to be involved in the community in an environment of service.
The responsibilities of Platte County Clerk include maintaining and preserving official records of the minutes, contracts and legal documents of the County Commission, while also, certifying tax levies to the State Auditor and Platte County Collector; reporting Aggregate Assessed Valuations to taxing districts; ensuring correct reporting of taxing jurisdictions’ Pro-Formas; processing and disbursing Accounts Payable; and issuing permits and licenses are other responsibilities. Further responsibilities include: - Notary Filings, Tow Truck Permits, Liquor Licenses, Auctioneer Licenses, Oaths of Office, and Sunshine Requests.
“I have lived in Platte County for 18 years, 10 of which were at Lake Waukomis,” Nafzinger said. “I have worked in supporting the community most of my career.”
None of her immediate family have served in local government, but her father, brother, and husband have all served in the military services.
“In the past, I have worked in administrative positions, which provided me with a strong set of skills that will serve me well when elected, Nafzinger said. “I am looking forward to being able to serve Platte County as Clerk because I think it’s important to have Democratic representation as well as Republican representation. I have noticed the lack of representation in our county elected officials with respect to Democrats. I believe that it is quite possible for both parties to work together and put differences aside to get the job done.”
She is most looking forward to serving as Platte County Clerk at the highest level, so she can satisfy the interests of both parties by placing the needs of Platte County citizens first.
“I will find it extremely rewarding to determine any ways the Clerk’s office can make improvements and implement strategies to handle the growing needs of prospering Platte County,” Nafzinger said. “Before our citizens vote on Nov. 8, I would like them to know that I will be effective and passionate about holding this office. I feel that when I win this seat it will be a wonderful way to serve as well as to give back to Platte County citizens.”
