Sawyer pitches perfect game

When Dayton Doll caught a pop fly to give Winnetonka (6-9) its third out in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the 10-0 victory for the Platte County baseball team (16-7), Sawyer Allen achieved the impossible and made program history.

Allen, who was on the mound for the Pirates all game long, completed a rare accomplishment: he hurled a perfect game. In the second win on the day over Winnetonka – with Platte County hosting a doubleheader – Sawyer struck out 10 Griffins and allowed zero hits in the 10-0 victory on April 22.

The Griffons had 18 trips to the plate with a chance to find a way on base, but Sawyer didn’t let a single player on. The Pirate struck out at least one batter every inning and the Platte County defense helped Sawyer out when the Griffins made contact.

The Pirates had one error in the game, happening in the bottom of the third inning, when Sawyer’s second potential strikeout in the inning was dropped, but the runner failed to reach first base on the play. Sawyer entered the final inning with nine strikeouts and reached the double-digit barrier with the first Winnetonka batter, followed by back-to-back fly outs.

The Platte County offense was also efficient, scoring in four of the six innings, including one run in the first inning. The Pirates opened the second inning off with two straight singles from Eli Nelson and James Schwieder to ignite a four-run inning.

Platte County’s Sawyer Allen pitched a perfect game in the second matchup with Winnetonka on April 22.

The two Pirates crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly from Cameron Dean and then Andrew Habel was walked. With one runner on base, Dayne Wassman converted on a 2-run homer over the right field fence and Platte County led 5-0.

The Pirates added four runs in the top of the fourth inning, beginning with a steal home by Wassman. A Nick Baker single and a double by Nelson gave Platte County a 9-0 margin and it added its last run in the top of the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly by Dylan Zimmerman.

Platte County had 10 hits on the day, led by Baker with three hits and two RBIs. Wassman had three RBIs on one hit.

In the first game of the day, Platte County held off a late comeback by scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win 8-6. The Pirates took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning and extended the margin to six runs in the third inning, but the Griffins fought back to tie the game in the sixth inning.

With one runner on and two outs in a 6-6 game in the bottom of the sixth inning, Nelson delivered. The senior doubled on a pop fly to center field to send Zimmerman across home plate.

Robertson singled in the next at-bat and Nelson scored to give Platte County an 8-6 margin. The Pirate defense held off the Griffins in the last inning.

Schwieder struck out six batters in four innings and Tyler Erickson had one strikeout in one inning to give him the win. Jake Knudson and Baker both had two hits in the game.

The season is on the back burner as the Pirates only have four games left ahead of districts. Platte County will host Grain Valley (15-9) on April 28.
